Done poorly, the coating traps air, yellows, or peels in sheets. Done well, it becomes a permanent lens that makes viewers ask if the piece is still wet with paint.

Select the Right Epoxy System for Mosaic Work

Art-grade resins labeled “non-yellowing” contain HALS and UV absorbers; hardware-store bar-top formulas do not. Spend the extra $20 now or watch turquoise tiles turn khaki in six months.

Viscosity matters: 600–800 cps flows into 2 mm grout gaps without pooling on glass. Thicker formulas need coaxing with a heat gun and waste time.

Measure pot life against your working area: a 40-minute gel window covers a 60 cm × 60 cm panel comfortably, but a 3 m wall demands the slower 90-minute version.

Test Compatibility Before You Commit

Place three loose tiles on a scrap board, mask a 1 cm border, and pour a 3 ml test patch. After 24 hours check for fisheyes around polymer-coated smalti or dulling on unsealed marble.

Prepare the Mosaic Surface Like a Pro

Any protruding shard becomes a lens ridge that catches light and dust. Zip a flat blade across the whole piece listening for the faint click of proud tesserae, then vacuum with a soft brush.

Oil from fingertips blocks adhesion; wipe once with denatured alcohol on lint-free cloth, turning the cloth to a clean side every pass. Residual glue haze turns opaque under resin—remove it with a razor scraper held at 30°.

Seal Porous Backers First

Plywood drinks resin sideways, creating starved dry spots on the face. Brush a 1:1 thinned coat on the reverse, edges, and 2 cm onto the front perimeter 24 hours before the flood coat.

This seals end grain so the main pour stays where you want it instead of vanishing into the core. Use the same resin you’ll flood with to guarantee chemical compatibility.

Epoxy is a dust magnet for six hours. Close HVAC vents, run a cheap box fan fitted with a 20-inch HVAC filter on low speed to create positive pressure, and tape a plastic sheet over the doorway.

Work after 7 p.m. when household traffic drops; every airborne hair that lands becomes a permanent fossil. Wear a lint-free tyvek suit if you own cats—fur rides air currents you can’t even see.

Mix Precise Ratios Without Bubble Entrapment

Digital scales remove guesswork: 100 g resin to 42 g hardener by weight for most 2.4:1 systems. Pour hardener first; resin is thicker and rinses the cup walls clean for perfect stoichiometry.

Stir slowly with a square-ended paddle, scraping the bottom corners twice every 30 seconds. After 3 minutes, swap to a second clean cup and stir 1 minute more to eliminate streaks that cause soft spots.

Degas Without a Vacuum Chamber

Thin streams create shear bubbles; instead, pour the mixed batch onto a wide aluminum tray. The increased surface area pops micro-bubbles in 60 seconds, faster than a noisy vacuum pump.

Drag a silicone squeegee across the tray once to release stubborn pockets. The resin is now bubble-free and still within pot life for pouring.

Pour and Spread for Mirror Finish

Start in the center and pour in a tight zig-zag, letting gravity carry the resin 2 cm from the tape dam. Use a 4-inch foam roller frame with a plastic spreader blade taped in place to push, not pull, the puddle.

Keep the blade angle at 45° and overlap passes by half to maintain even 1 mm depth. Work methodically; random backtracking creates ridges that telegraph through the final gloss.

Remove Surface Bubbles Instantly

Wave a propane torch 15 cm above the surface in a steady sweep; the brief heat drop lowers surface tension and bubbles vanish without scorching. Do not pause, or you’ll melt the tape dam into the resin.

LED UV lamps also work for artists forbidden open flame: pass at 30 cm for 5 seconds per tile width. The warmth is gentler on delicate gold leaf tesserae.

Spot-Correct Flaws While Still Tacky

At 90 minutes, probe a corner with a toothpick; if it dents but doesn’t drag, don your headlamp. Dust specks show up as tiny shadows; lift them out with the sticky tip of a gloved finger, not tweezers that scratch.

Low spots reveal themselves as dull islands. Drip 0.5 ml of fresh resin from a cocktail stick; surface tension pulls it flush without sanding.

Cure Schedule for Maximum Hardness

Room-temperature curing reaches 80 % strength in 24 hours, but full cross-link needs 72. Place a space heater 2 m away set to 25 °C for the first 12 hours to accelerate without bubbles.

Do not rush with heat guns; localized hot spots create internal stresses that frost the surface. After day three, the resin withstands fingernail scratches and cold water cleaning.

Post-Cure for Outdoor Panels

Sunlight drives unreacted amines to the surface, causing yellow bloom. Bake the cured mosaic at 60 °C for 2 hours in a borrowed ceramic kiln or a black plastic tent under noon sun to drive off these residues.

Let it cool slowly; rapid contraction crazes the gloss. The extra day doubles UV resistance, critical for south-facing installations.

Sand and Polish Only If You Must

A perfect pour needs no sanding, but accidents happen. Start with 400 grit wet paper wrapped around a soft pad to keep edges flat; dry sanding loads paper and leaves white scuffs.

Rinse and step to 800, 1500, then 3000, spending 30 seconds per tile. Polish with 2 μm cerium oxide on a felt wheel at 1200 rpm, moving continuously to avoid heat spots that blush the resin.

Apply a UV-Blocking Topcoat for Harsh Exposures

Even UV-stable resins chalk after five years in Arizona sun. Spray two mist coats of automotive 2K clear with 10 % flattening agent; the microscopic texture diffuses glare and adds sacrificial UV armor.

Mask the mosaic with kraft paper, expose 2 mm of the resin perimeter so the topcoat overlaps and seals the edge. The spray dries in 30 minutes and can be renewed annually without stripping.

Mount Without Flexing the Resin Skin

A 1 mm epoxy skin can spider-crack if the substrate bows. Anchor outdoor panels with silicone beads every 10 cm on a rigid aluminum composite backer; the elastomer allows 3 mm thermal movement.

Indoor frames need foam tape shims at corners to keep screws from twisting the board. Hang using Z-clips rated for triple the panel weight; the resin adds 2 kg per square meter people forget to count.

Clean and Maintain the Gloss Decades Later

Dust with a microfiber mop dampened in distilled water plus one drop of pH-neutral dish soap. Rubbing alcohol clouds some art resins; test a corner first if you must disinfect.

Never use vinegar or citrus; acids micro-etch the surface and trap future dirt. Once a year, wipe with a polymer-safe UV polish to rejuvenate surface slip and shed water spots.
