Outdoor growers lose up to 30 % of young transplants to sun-scald each summer. A UV-stable mesh canopy blocks the harshest rays while still feeding plants the light they need for vigorous growth.
Not all shade fabrics survive two seasons in full sun. Cheap polypropylene can disintegrate in eleven months, dumping micro-plastics into soil and leaving crops exposed at the worst moment.
Why UV Resistance Matters More Than Shade Percentage
Ultraviolet radiation embrittles polymer chains, so a 50 % shade cloth that tears in the wind becomes 0 % shade. The loss happens gradually; by the time you notice pinholes, the tensile strength has already dropped 40 %.
Consider lettuce in Zone 9b. Understanding kLy and MJ/m² Dosing
One kilolangley equals 41.8 MJ/m². Coastal Oregon receives 1 400 kLy per year, while Phoenix tops 2 600 kLy. Size your mesh for the site, not the region.

Resale Value of Used Fabric
After 8 years, UV-stable HDPE still tests at 70 % strength. Greenhouse builders buy it for 30 % of new price to shade propagation houses. Budget brands shred into micro-yarn and become a disposal fee, not an asset.
Recycling and End-of-Life Options
Clean HDPE mesh is accepted by recyclers if metal clips are removed. One 1 000 m² bay yields 180 kg of #2 plastic, enough to make 4 000 irrigation pots. Carbon-black grades are pelletized into drainage pipe, keeping the loop closed.
Incineration releases 0.8 kg CO₂ per kg of HDPE, but landfilling can leak micro-plastics for centuries. Partner with regional ag plastic collectors; many offer on-farm shredding and pay $0.08/kg, offsetting freight.

Hold a 20 × 20 cm sample against the midday sun. Rotate it 45°; any pinprick white spots indicate thin filament or missing coating. Fold the cloth double and tug; a 20 kg pull should show < 2 mm stretch. More stretch means low molecular weight resin.
