How to Accurately Measure Garden Gate Openings
A garden gate that scrapes the frame or refuses to latch quietly ruins both aesthetics and security. Precise measurements taken once, in the right order, eliminate callbacks and costly re-cuts.
Below you’ll find a field-tested sequence that works for arched cottage gates, heavy steel driveway gates, and ultra-light aluminum pool gates alike. Master these steps and you’ll order or build a gate that swings like a bank vault door on the first try.
Map the Opening Before You Touch a Tape
Walk through the gap and photograph it from both sides, noting which post leans, which stone rises, and where the sprinkler head sits. These images become your reference when you’re back at the bench deciding hinge placement.
Sketch a simple elevation: a rectangle with the ground line, hinge side, latch side, and any slope arrows. Even a crude drawing prevents you from measuring the wrong axis when you’re kneeling in mud.
Label the Structural Posts
Mark the hinge post “A” and the latch post “B” with painter’s tape; this removes all doubt when you record numbers later. Posts shift over years, so always measure the face that will actually receive hardware, not the presumed center line.
Check for Micro-Movement
Push each post horizontally with your shoulder; a visibly wiggling post will settle another 5–10 mm after the gate hangs. Record that future gap now by sliding a flat bar between post and concrete and noting the gap width.
Choose the Correct Tape and Helper
A 3 m pocket tape flexes too much; use a rigid 8 m steel blade with a 25 mm-wide standoff hook. The wider hook grabs the post edge without slipping, giving you repeatable readings within 1 mm.
One person holds the tape hook while the other reads; solo measurements almost always drift 2–3 mm as the blade bows. If you must work alone, clamp the hook with a small spring clamp so you can tension the blade with both hands free.
Zero the Hook Properly
Close the hook jaws fully on the post edge, then push the tape body until the blade just kisses the opposite post; this compensates for the hook’s 0.5 mm thickness. Many gates fail because the hook gap was ignored on day one.
Measure Width at Three Critical Heights
Gate makers assume you’ll quote the narrowest point, not the average. Measure at 100 mm above ground (where dogs dig), 700 mm (mid-rail), and 1500 mm (top rail).
On clay soils the top often spreads 10 mm wider than the bottom after frost heave. Always subtract that frost swell from your final width so summer humidity doesn’t pinch the gate.
Account for Hinge Barrel Space
Strap hinges add 25–30 mm to the hinge-side gap when the gate is closed. Deduct this overlay from your width measurement so the latch meets the strike plate dead-on.
Record Opening Height from Highest Ground Point
Stretch a mason’s line tight across the threshold and slide a 150 mm spirit level along it; mark every high spot with chalk. Measure vertically from this wandering line to the underside of the top beam at three points.
Subtract 50 mm for ground clearance if you mulch heavily; otherwise autumn leaves lift the gate each year. For automated gates, leave 80 mm so the wheel sensor never grinds against a winter frost heave.
Handle Arched Lintels
Place a straight batten across the springing points of the arch, then drop a plumb bob to the ground; this gives you the effective rectangular height. Measure the arch rise separately and forward both numbers to the blacksmith so the curve can be replicated without guessing.
Diagnose Slope with a Water Level
Fill 8 m of clear vinyl tubing with water and stand both ends side by side; the meniscus will settle to an exact level regardless of terrain. Mark the hinge-post waterline, then walk the free end to the latch post and mark again.
The difference between marks reveals the true slope in millimetres, not degrees; gate kits quote offsets in millimetres, not angles. A 20 mm rise over 1 m sounds trivial but forces a 12 mm diagonal twist into the frame.
Calculate Swing Clearance
An outward-opening gate on a 1:10 slope needs an extra 40 mm bottom edge bevel so the inner corner doesn’t dig at 90° open. Transfer this bevel angle to your order sheet so the fabricator cuts once.
Factor in Seasonal Wood Movement
Western red cedar expands 1% across the grain from winter to summer in humid zones. On a 900 mm-wide gate that’s 9 mm—enough to jam a tongue-and-groove infill.
Order the gate 5 mm narrower than the winter opening and let the summer humidity tighten the fit. If you must install in July, shrink the gate by 8 mm instead.
Seal End Grain Before Measuring
Brush a quick coat of oil on the post tops after measuring; unsealed end grain can swell 2 mm overnight in a rainstorm and invalidate yesterday’s careful numbers. A 10-minute seal saves a second trip.
Verify Diagonal Squareness
Measure the opening diagonals from top-left to bottom-right and vice-versa. A 5 mm difference equals roughly 0.3° out of square, acceptable for most strap hinges.
Beyond 8 mm, hang the gate plumb and let the latch-side adjustable strike absorb the taper; otherwise the hinge will bind after the first rainfall softens the posts.
Use Pythagoras in the Field
Carry a 3-4-5 plywood jig cut precisely 600-800-1000 mm; hold it inside the corner to confirm 90° without mental math. Any gap between jig and post face tells you which direction to shim the hinge.
Plan Hardware Encroachment
Auto-closing spring hinges project 45 mm beyond the post face when fully open; add this to your width worksheet so the gate clears the neighbor’s brick pier. Draw a 1:10 scale sketch on graph paper and slide the hinge template along it to visualize conflicts.
Drop rods need 200 mm of overshoot past the open position; mark this radius on the driveway with chalk to ensure the parked car stays clear. A single chalk arc prevents a future paint scratch apology.
Position Electric Actuators
Articulating arm openers require 100 mm of inward clearance at 135° open; measure from the post centerline to the nearest obstruction and compare with the manufacturer’s sweep diagram. If the rose bed infringes, relocate the post now, not after the concrete sets.
Translate Measurements to Order Sheets
Gate fabs reject orders that list “about 1 m wide.” Enter width first, height second, hinge side third, followed by slope offset. Add the suffix “CLEAR OPENING” in capitals so the shop knows you already deducted hinges and clearance.
Photograph the tape blade alongside each measurement and attach the JPG to the email; visual proof overrides finger-slip typos. Keep one printed copy in the toolbox so on-site crews can cross-check delivery against the original.
Specify Tolerance Expectations
Write “±2 mm on width, ±3 mm on height, diagonal difference max 4 mm” in the notes. Without stated tolerance the shop may ship a gate 6 mm oversize and blame your opening.
Mock-Up with Cheap Battens
Before the £400 iroko gate arrives, screw together 44×44 mm pine studs to the exact recorded size and swing it in the gap. The mock-up reveals hinge post flex, latch misalignment, and ground scrape at minimal cost.
Adjust the real posts while they’re still accessible, then reuse the battens as temporary bracing during the final hang. A 30-minute mock-up prevents a three-hour remap with a 40 kg gate in hand.
Account for Future Surface Finishes
Planed all-round timber swells 2 mm per face after the first coat of exterior oil. Measure the bare opening, then subtract 4 mm total if you’ll oil both sides before hanging. Powder-coated aluminum gates gain 0.1 mm per coat, irrelevant singly but stack four color layers and you’ve lost half a millimetre.
Keep the finish schedule on the same clipboard as the measurements so the next owner doesn’t blow the fit with a DIY repaint.
Document Everything for Warranty
Save the annotated sketch, water-level photo, diagonal numbers, and mock-up video in a dated folder. Suppliers accept warranty claims faster when you prove the opening was stable and square at install.
A one-page PDF beats a shoebox of receipts when the latch weld cracks two winters later.
